How to Fix a Refrigerator Leaking Water Inside

This is the first step you have to take when it comes to fixing a leak in your fridge. Before you can fix the leak, you have to know where it is. the good news here is that there are only a few sources that may cause the water to leak.

Here are some of those sources:

• The Water Line – This Includes the Ice Maker, Dispenser, And Water Dispenser
• The Drain – Could be clogged.
• The Drain Pan – The fridge may not be level and water drips over the edge of the pan.
• The Tube in Your Drawers – Some fridge models have little water tubes that go into and through the crisper drawers. These may have sprung a leak, or the drain is clogged.

How to Fix a Water Leak in Your Fridge

Step 1: The Water Line

This may be the biggest leak and the hardest one to fix. That is because it can become kinked, get a hole, or just have a loose connection. The type of leak also depends on if the line is made from plastic, nylon, or copper.

If you find a hole in the waterline, it is best to simply just remove it and replace the bad line with a new one. That goes without saying anything more. Then if the leak is in the compression fittings, just take an adjustable wrench and tighten the fitting up.

Step 2: A Clogged Water Line

This is always a possibility and when the water line does get clogged, you will see water gather in spots where water should not be. To handle this issue there are a few steps you need to take.

1. Unplug your fridge so you do not have any electrical surprises. Pull it away from the wall and then empty your freezer.
2. Once the freezer is empty you should have a clear path to the access panel, and you need to remove that to get to the clogged drain.
3. Get a funnel or other small kitchen item that can handle the hot water and fit in your freezer. Pour some hot water into the waterline. The hot water should clear out any blockage. If it doesn’t add 2 tsp. of baking soda to 2 cups of hot water and try again.
4. If those two tricks do not work, you need to get a coat hanger, straighten it out and push it into the waterline. This step must be done with care or you can ruin the waterline and have to replace it. You will know you succeeded when you hear the water running into the drain pan.
5. Put everything back into the freezer, push it back into place, and plug it in. All that should be done after returning the access panel to its rightful spot.

Step 3: The Drain Pan

If this is full it may be because the fridge is not level. Gently rock your fridge back and forth. If it rocks easily, then you need to use the foot levelers to level the appliance. If it doesn’t level right, the floor may not be level at that spot, and you would have to move your fridge to another spot.

Step 4: The Crisper Drawers

There is a water tube on some models that goes through the crispers to a drain underneath those drawers. Remove the drawers and if you see a little water pooling underneath those drawers then that drain is clogged.

To unclog this drain, you would need to get a small narrow plumber’s snake and send it into the drain. Maneuver the snake until the clog has been removed.
