An Ounce of Prevention

The first step in cleaning the grease off your fridge is to stop it from accumulating in the first place. The best way to do that is to slip a couple of sheets of wax paper onto the top of your fridge and leave them there.

As you cook, the grease will be drawn to the wax paper and not to the fridge’s surface. Once you are ready to clean your fridge exterior, you just pick up the wax paper and throw it away, then replace the old with new sheets. That is all there is to it.

Plus, you do not have to worry about when to replace those pieces of wax paper. They will last until you are ready to clean again or when you are about to replace the original box you took them from in the beginning. Or replace them whenever you feel like it is time to do that small task.

You may not be aware of this, but grease and oil can fly. Small particles of grease can get taken by the cooking vapor and deposited in all sorts of hard-to-reach places. While cleaning the grease up is not that complicated, it can take a little effort, which is why many people do not like to do this chore.

Here are the steps you need to take in order to clean that grease off and have a nice-looking fridge top again:

Step 1 – Fill a bucket with about a gallon of warm water. Cold is not effective, and you do not need hot water.

Step 2 – Add liquid soap with a degreasing formula to the water and mix well. You want to see a lot of soapy suds and if you don’t, just add more soap. You can also add the soap to the empty bucket then fill it with warm water.

Step 3 – Take a clean, cloth and wet it. Wring out any excess water as you do not want to leave any puddles behind. Start wiping. The warm water should melt the grease so it will be easy to wipe up.

Step 4 – Once you are finished wiping the grease up, empty the bucket, rinse it out well with warm to hot water so it is clean again. Then add more water without any soap or other additives.

Step 5 – Take another clean cloth, wet it, and wring the excess off. Then rinse the top of your fridge by repeating your wiping action. Repeat till all the soap and grease are gone from the top of your fridge.

Step 6 – Now take a dry cloth and wipe the top of the fridge, getting rid of any excess moisture, and dry the metal.

Step 7 – This is not mandatory, but you can use appliance wipes or some other polishing method to bring that luster you like so much back to the top of your fridge.

Two Tips to Consider Using

  1. Before laying out the wax paper, you should use either a degreasing cleanser or lemon juice to clean the top of the fridge. It is always best to start with a clean fridge top.
  2. Instead of using wax paper, you can use newspaper. The only drawback is that newspaper will not last as long as wax paper does. But newspaper deteriorates faster in the landfill than wax paper will.

Cleaning grease from the top of your fridge is more of a time-consuming exercise than a difficult one to perform. If you take the right preventive steps, you can make that chore even easier. Or you can just stop cooking at home and eat out all the time. That will spare you this chore as well.
