How to Clean Grease from Concrete

Oil on concrete under a car

Try as you might, it can be difficult keeping your concrete driveway free of grease. Sometimes, cars just do not want to co-operate and drip oil onto the driveway all day and all night long. Soon you end up with a large grease stain that makes your house and garage look terrible.

Short of getting rid of your car, there are ways to get rid of that grease stain. It will take a little work but once the work is over your driveway looks good again. Take a few moments and see if the following information will help you have a grease-free driveway.

How to Clean Grease from Concrete

1. Baking Soda and a Brush

This ingredient seems to be present at every cleaning job. It should as it can be a very powerful cleanser. Whether inside or outside, baking soda will help you keep your home and property nice and clean.

To use it to clean grease off a driveway or other concrete area, first, spread a thick layer of baking soda over the grease stain. Then let the baking soda sit there for about 30 minutes.

After that time frame has expired, get a solid brush with nylon bristles. Put a few drops of dishwashing liquid on those bristles and start to scrub the baking soda-covered area. You will need to use some warm water on the bristles as well.

2. TSP and Water

In this method, you will need one cup of TSP and one gallon of water. Mix the two together and when the TSP has dissolved, add in enough sawdust to make a peanut butter-like paste.

When the paste is ready, spread it over the grease stain and let it sit overnight. The next morning, use a good push broom and sweep away the dried paste. The grease should go with the paste at the same time.

If the grease doesn’t disappear with the paste, repeat the process until it does.

3. Coca Cola & Kitty Litter

The materials needed will be 3 cans of cola, a small bag of kitty litter, a good cleaning brush, 1 cup laundry detergent, 1 cup bleach, one gallon of hot water, and a garden hose. The first step in this process is to spread the kitty litter over the grease and let it sit for a few minutes.

You can grind this litter into the stain with your shoe if you want. Once you are done, sweep up the kitty litter and put it in the garbage can. Next, pour some cola over the stain and scrub with the cleaning brush.

Keep the stain wet so pour more cola if you need it onto the stain. Let the cola remain on the stain for about 20 minutes and then rinse off with the hose. at this point, you mix the detergent, bleach, and hot water together.

The laundry soap should be ammonia-free and when this mixture is ready, grab a new brush and scrub the stained area. Rinse the area using the hose once you are done.

4. Sawdust & Vinegar

Mix 1/2 cup of washing soda in with 1 cup of vinegar, 1/4 tsp. of dishwashing liquid, and 2 cups of water then set aside for now. Next, take some sawdust and sprinkle it over the greasy stain. Let it sit for a bit and then brush or sweep the sawdust into a trash bag.

Next, pour a little of the solution over the stain and scrub with the brush. Keep doing this until the stain is gone. Once the stain is removed, rinse well with clean water.

5. Acetone & Baking Soda Paste

Exact measurements are not needed here as you are mixing enough acetone and baking soda to make a good paste. Put enough of the two ingredients together so that you have what you need to cover the stain.

Next, spread the mixture over the stain and then cover the area with plastic. The plastic should stay on for 24 hours. After that time frame is over, remove the plastic and let the paste dry.

When dry, simply sweep the paste and the stain into a garbage can, pan, or bag. You can repeat as necessary.
