How to Clean Grease off Painted Walls

Grease travels. Travelling is one of its favorite pastimes and where it goes is generally right to your nearby painted walls. Sometimes it stops on the nearest appliance but somehow it always gets to those painted walls.

How to Clean Grease off Painted Walls

The following methods should work without harming your walls if you are careful. Some cleaning items are acidic and if you do not dilute them properly, you may damage the paint or remove it in spots.

1. Vinegar and Water

This solution needs a 1 to 1 ratio mix. That means if you add 3 cups of water to a pail, you need to add 3 cups of vinegar to the same pail. Then once mixed, pour the solution into a spray bottle. This will help you control the amount of acidic nature of the vinegar.

Next, spray the areas where the grease is and wait only a few minutes before you start to wipe. Use a soft cloth or sponge as scrubbing utensils tend to take the paint with them as they pass the cleaning spot.

Do not be afraid to spray more of the solution on those grease spots as your objective is to get all the grease off at the same time. You may want to rinse with a damp cloth to remove all the vinegar.

2. Baking Soda and Water

In this method, you want 1 cup of water mixed with 1/4 cup of baking soda. The goal is to have a runny paste, not a thick paste. Like the previous method, once you have the paste, you rub it on the grease spots and let it soak for a few minutes.

When it is time to wipe the paste off, use a soft cloth dampened by hot water. Then wipe till all the paste and the grease are gone. You can repeat this process until you are satisfied your walls are clean. Dry the area with a soft clean cloth so nothing ruins your paint.

3. Corn Starch & Water

This time you are mixing 1/2 cup of corn starch in 1 cup of water. Mix well until you get a thick paste. You do not want a runny one in this method. But you do not want it dry either. it can be slightly runny, but it should be wet so that it can be spread easily.

After spreading the paste, let it soak in for a little longer than a few minutes. The corn starch is supposed to absorb the grease, so it needs time to do that. When that time period is over, dip a microfiber cloth into some hot water, squeeze out the excess moisture, and wipe the paste and the grease away.

Then rinse when you have cleaned up the paste and the grease.

4. Dishwashing Liquid and Water

This is the go-to method as it is the one most people use. To use this solution, you need to put a 1/2 cup of liquid dishwashing soap with a degreaser in a bucket. Then add a gallon of water. Warm to hot water will be best to use.

Once you have mixed these two ingredients, you just get a clean, soft cloth and begin to wipe your greasy walls. Leave the solution in place for 20 minutes, then get another clean, soft cloth and dampen it with hot water.

Wipe down the walls making sure you clean up all the soapy mixture you put on the walls. Make sure to get all the residue off the walls.

5. Lemon Juice & Borax

This is another option that has some acidic influences so be careful when mixing the two ingredients together. To make this paste, you will need 1/4 cup of Borax powder and 1 cup of lemon juice.

Next, you can put some hot water in a spray bottle and spray it onto the greasy stains. Then take the paste and spread it over those same stains. Leave the paste in place for about 30 minutes.

After that, moisten a soft cloth with hot water and scrub the paste into the grease. Get another cloth and rinse down your walls thoroughly. Don’t forget to dry your walls after you got all the paste off.
