Garbage Disposal Not Working After Reset? Check These Next
Pressing the red button fixes most stalled disposals. When it does not, work through power, switch and jam checks in order before paying for a new unit.

If your garbage disposal still does not work after you press the reset button, the problem is most often power that is not reaching the unit (a tripped breaker or GFCI, an unplugged cord or a failed wall switch) or a jam that keeps tripping the overload. Work through the checks below in order; most take a few minutes and need no tools beyond a 1/4-inch hex key. Keep the power off whenever you reach under or into the unit, and leave any work inside the wall switch or junction box to a licensed electrician.
Quick diagnosis
| What happens when you flip the switch | Most likely cause | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Nothing at all, reset button stays in | No power: breaker, GFCI, plug or switch | Power checks below |
| Nothing, reset button pops out again | Overload still tripping: jam or overheating | Clear jam, let it cool 10 to 20 minutes |
| Hums, does not turn | Jammed turntable | Hex key unjam; see disposal not spinning |
| Breaker trips immediately | Short circuit, ground fault or seized motor | Stop; call an electrician or replace the unit |
| Works only sometimes | Loose connection or failing switch | Have the switch and wiring checked |
What you need
- 1/4-inch hex key or the disposal’s own wrench
- Flashlight and tongs
- A lamp or plug-in outlet tester
- Non-contact voltage tester (optional, for confirming power is off)
Step-by-step checks
- Reset correctly. Turn the wall switch off first. Press the red button on the bottom of the disposal gently until it clicks and stays in. If it will not stay, the motor is still hot: wait about ten minutes and try again. InSinkErator’s reset instructions also note that its EZ Connect units have no button and reset by switching off or unplugging for up to 20 minutes.
- Check the breaker panel. Find the breaker for the disposal or kitchen circuit. A tripped breaker sits in the middle or off position. Switch it fully off, then back on. Our guide on resetting a tripped breaker explains what to look for.
- Check GFCI outlets. If the under-sink outlet or a nearby counter outlet has Test and Reset buttons, press Reset. Some kitchens have one GFCI protecting several outlets downstream.
- Check the plug and outlet. With the wall switch on, plug a lamp into the under-sink outlet. If the lamp does not light with the switch on, the problem is the switch, the outlet or the circuit, not the disposal.
- Check for a hidden jam. Power off, then turn the hex key in the socket under the unit. If it will not turn full circles, clear the jam and remove the object with tongs. A jam that is not obvious from above can keep tripping the overload.
- Try again with cold water running. If the disposal now starts, run it for 30 seconds with a steady cold stream.
Signs of a wiring or switch problem
Stop and call a licensed electrician if you notice any of these. They are not DIY jobs for most homeowners, and kitchen circuits combine water and electricity.
- A burning or hot plastic smell at the switch, outlet or disposal
- Scorch marks, melted plastic or a warm switch plate
- A breaker that trips every time the disposal starts
- Buzzing or crackling from the wall switch
- Loose or damaged cord, or a hardwired cable that has pulled out of its clamp
The Electrical Safety Foundation (ESFi) has home electrical safety guidance on warning signs like these.
Air switches and batch feed models
If your disposal is controlled by a push button on the countertop (an air switch), the button sends a puff of air through a small tube to a control box under the sink. A cracked tube, a disconnected tube or a failed control box will make the disposal seem dead. Check that the tube is firmly attached at both ends. Replacement parts are available but must match the system.
A batch feed disposal will not run unless its stopper cover is in place and turned to the on position. Make sure the cover is seated correctly; a worn or damaged cover, or the sensor that detects it, can also stop it.
When to replace the disposal
Replacing is usually the sensible choice when:
- Power reaches the unit, the turntable turns freely by hand, and it still will not run or only hums
- The unit trips the breaker with no jam present
- It is leaking from the bottom or from around the reset button (see disposal leaking from the reset button)
- It is old, noisy and jams often, and repair parts are not sold for your model
Check the warranty first. Many disposals carry multi-year manufacturer warranties, and some include in-home service. Your model number is on a label on the disposal body. As of 2026, national cost guides put professional labor for a straightforward swap at very roughly $140 to $270, before the price of the unit; local rates vary.
When to call a pro
Call a licensed electrician for any switch, outlet, junction box or circuit problem. Call a plumber or the manufacturer’s service network if the disposal itself needs replacing and you are not comfortable disconnecting the drain and dishwasher lines.
Bottom line
When reset does not work, check power in order: breaker, GFCI, plug, switch. Then rule out a hidden jam with the hex key. If the unit has power, turns freely and still will not run, it is time for a replacement rather than more troubleshooting.
FAQ
How long should I wait after pressing reset?
If the button will not stay in, wait about ten minutes for the motor to cool, then try again.
Can a disposal motor burn out?
Yes. Repeated jams, running while stalled and age can wear out the motor. When the plate turns freely and the motor only hums, burnout or a failed internal part is likely.
Is the disposal on its own breaker?
Sometimes, but not always. It may share a circuit with the dishwasher or other kitchen loads. Your panel labels, or an electrician, can confirm.
Why does my disposal work only when I jiggle the switch?
That points to a worn switch or a loose connection. Stop using it and have the switch and wiring checked by an electrician.
