What is Corian?
Contents
This is what is called a solid surface material that was invented back in 1967 by DuPont. It is man-made material, or it can be manufactured out of engineered stone. Corian is a brand name for this type of countertop and to make it DuPont combined acrylic polymers with stone-derived materials.
Once ready this mix is poured into half-inch molds. The material is consistent throughout so you will not find flaws like too much stone in one spot and too much acrylic in another.
Because of the different ingredients used, you can get some very nice features and designs not available in other kitchen countertop materials. Since DuPont let its patent expire, there are many competitors in this market.
Different businesses give this material their own name including Staron, Swanstone, Avonite, Wilsonart / Gibraltar, Formica, LG, Hanex, and Meganite. There are some differences in the ingredients and how much of each ingredient will be used in making these alternatives.
But they all are similar to Corian and can last as long and look just as great.
How to Repair a Burn Mark on Corian Countertop
Materials Needed
Clean rags, warm water, dish soap, regular toothpaste, soft cloth, countertop sandpaper, countertop polish.
Step By Step Process
Step 1 – Mix warm water and the dish soap to make a nice soapy solution. Take a rag and wet it. You want the rag to be damp, not soaking wet. Rub the surface of the burn to remove any dirt or loose burn marks.
Step 2 – Dry the area and then squeeze some toothpaste over the burn mark. Buff the area using the soft cloth and go in the direction of the grain. You can use an old toothbrush here if you want.
Also, if your Corian countertop was chemically treated, this step can be skipped.
Step 3 – Put some countertop cleaner on another rag or cloth and rub it over the burn mark. Keep rubbing until the color of the burn has disappeared.
Step 4 – After the color has gone, take the sandpaper and start sanding down the area. Continue sanding till the mark is gone. Use firm but gentle strokes going with the grain.
Step 5 – Wipe away the dust and make sure the area is clean. Then apply the countertop polish to bring out the original luster of the Corian material.
Step 6 – Let the area thoroughly dry first before allowing any water or other liquids on that section of your countertop.
