How to Clean the Outside of a Black Refrigerator

Black appliances in a kitchen with honey colored cabinets

When you are in the middle of finishing your kitchen renovations, a black fridge just seems to take that kitchen look to another level. There is just something about the color black combined with a fridge that makes your kitchen look sophisticated.

However, no matter how great those black fridges look they do tend to get dirty. When they do get dirty, they also tend to show off that dirt like it is a badge of honor. To learn how to clean that dirt and those ugly fingerprints off your black fridge, just continue to read our article.

It has the information you need to know about in order to keep your fridge and kitchen looking their finest.

The Problem

Not only do black fridges get a lot of fingerprint marks on them as well as dirt, but there are also other problems that arise when you own one. Those problems all relate to how to clean those smudges, etc., off the fridge.

You can’t use abrasive cleansers because the surface will be ruined. Then you cannot use hard stiff sponges, cloths, or brushes either. The reason for their exclusion is that they can scratch the nice smooth black surface of the fridge.

Then, there are many types of glass and other cleaners that may take the dirt off, but they leave a sign behind that they were there. Either messy residue or streaks remain behind letting everyone know you didn’t clean very well.

It is almost second nature to reach for paper towels as well, but that handy little cleaning option can scratch the surface of the fridge also. There are few options left.

There are two steps in knowing how to clean your black fridge, so it glistens like it did when it was new. Here are those two steps:

1. Gather Your Cleaning Tools

What you will need is a dishwashing liquid, a soft non-abrasive sponge, glass cleaner and a terry cloth or microfiber towel. If you do not have glass cleaner, then you can substitute ammonia or vinegar in place of it.

 2. Follow the Instructions

Step 1: Mix 1 tsp of dishwashing liquid into a pint of warm water and mix well.

Step 2: Dip your non-abrasive sponge into the soapy mixture and wring it out. You do not need a lot of water and soap on the sponge to clean those fingerprints, etc.

Step 3: Wipe the sponge over your fridge and gently scrub the areas that are the dirtiest. When they appear to be gone, let the fridge dry.

Step 4: Now spray some glass cleaner directly onto the microfiber or terry cloth towel. Once that is done rub the surface of the fridge until all the residue and streaks disappear.

Step 5: Take a dry part of that cloth and using a circular motion buff the surface until all residue and streaks have gone.

How to Avoid Scratching Your Black Fridge Surface

Scratches can easily get in your beautiful black finish and they are always done accidentally. When scratches appear, your nice expensive fridge may look like it went through a war zone to get to your home.

There are steps you can take to make sure those scratches never happen either by accident or on purpose.

  • One is to make sure you and your family are not holding keys, utensils, metal objects, sharp rings, and other objects when opening the fridge door. Make sure they open the door with empty hands.
  • Also, make sure they put those objects down far away from your fridge so that other accidents won’t happen when they pick them up again.
  • As for oily or greasy dirt, fingerprints, and regular dirt, make sure your family cleans their dirty hands first before touching the fridge. And that they use the handle all the time either to open or to close the door.

As they say, ‘an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure’ and you need a lot of prevention when you bring a black fridge into your home.

Keeping your black fridge nice and clean will not always be successful. When it does eventually get those fingerprints and greasy marks on it, just follow the simple instructions above to get that surface clean again.

It will take a little elbow grease to rub off those stains, but that effort will be worth it when you see your black fridge glisten again.
